Safety is not optional. Read this entire page before attempting any DIY project involving lye, essential oils, or hot materials.

Fundamental Safety Rules
Eye Protection
Always wear splash-proof safety goggles when handling lye, essential oils, or hot liquids. Regular glasses are NOT sufficient protection.
Skin Protection
Wear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or rubber) and cover all exposed skin with long sleeves and pants. Natural fibers like cotton are preferred.
Ventilation
Work in well-ventilated areas. Open windows, use exhaust fans, or work outdoors when handling lye or strong essential oils.
Workspace Setup
Cover work surfaces with newspaper or plastic. Keep children and pets away. Have clean water accessible for emergencies.
First Aid Guide
Lye Contact with Skin
Symptoms:
Burning sensation, redness, blistering
Action:
Immediately flush with cool running water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing while flushing. Do NOT use vinegar. Seek medical attention for burns larger than 3 inches or on face/joints.
Lye Contact with Eyes
Symptoms:
Severe pain, tearing, vision changes
Action:
Flush immediately with cool water for at least 20 minutes. Hold eyelids open. Do NOT rub eyes. Seek emergency medical care immediately – lye can cause permanent blindness.
Lye Ingestion
Symptoms:
Mouth/throat burns, difficulty swallowing, vomiting
Action:
Do NOT induce vomiting. Drink water or milk to dilute (if conscious and able to swallow). Call poison control immediately. Do not give anything by mouth if person is unconscious.
Essential Oil Skin Reaction
Symptoms:
Redness, itching, burning, rash
Action:
Wash area with mild soap and water. Apply carrier oil to dilute (not water alone). If reaction is severe or spreads, seek medical attention.
Burns from Hot Oils/Soap
Symptoms:
Pain, redness, blistering
Action:
Cool the burn under running water for 10-20 minutes. Cover with sterile bandage. Do not apply ice, butter, or toothpaste. Seek medical care for large or severe burns.

Before Starting
- Read entire recipe before beginning
- Gather all ingredients and tools
- Put on all safety gear (goggles, gloves, long sleeves)
- Ensure children and pets are not in the area
- Open windows or turn on exhaust fan
- Cover work surfaces with protective material
- Have clean water accessible nearby
- Know location of first aid supplies
During Process
- Never leave lye solution unattended
- Always add lye to water, never water to lye
- Keep face away from lye fumes
- Do not touch face or eyes while working
- Handle hot oils carefully
- Clean up spills immediately
- Label all containers clearly
After Finishing
- Clean all equipment thoroughly
- Dispose of lye solution properly (down drain with lots of water)
- Wash hands and arms even after removing gloves
- Store finished product safely away from children/pets
- Label products with date and ingredients
- Allow cold process soap to cure in safe location
